What Is a Nurse-Midwife?
Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are registered advanced practice nurses with graduate-level training in midwifery. They are certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board to provide comprehensive obstetrical and gynecological care throughout life.
Midwives collaborate with obstetricians and other healthcare professionals to provide customized, comprehensive pregnancy care. They have a history of very low induction and Cesarean delivery rates.
Is a Nurse-Midwife Right for Me?
Nurse-midwifery is founded on the philosophy that pregnancy and childbirth are healthy, normal life events requiring only minimal intervention for births that are low risk and uncomplicated.
Many women who inquire about nurse-midwife care seek a more active decision-making role in their birthing experience. Women whose deliveries are attended by a nurse-midwife often describe the experience as “empowering” and “highly personalized.”
