Spine Treatments

You are not alone in having back, neck, or spine pain. Half of all Americans say they have one of these ailments at some time. Your pain may be the result of a muscle strain or soft tissue injury that can be resolved with rest, exercise, and anti-inflammatory medication. Or, you may require more advanced care, such as surgery.

Whatever your needs may be, New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and anesthesiology/pain medicine collaborate to provide the full range of surgical and nonsurgical treatment options for back, neck, and spine pain. We help you return to your normal activities.

Nonsurgical Treatment

We treat back, neck, and spine conditions in the most minimally invasive way whenever possible. Your physician will determine if your pain can be reduced and your function restored through:

  • Rest
  • Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Stretching and strengthening home exercise
  • Activity modification
  • Muscle relaxant medication

Surgical Treatment

Your physician may recommend surgery if your condition has not responded to nonsurgical remedies and interferes with your regular activity.

Surgeons are committed to using the most minimally invasive approach when possible. Surgical options, some of which can be performed minimally invasively if you are a candidate include:

  • Discectomy
  • Laminectomy
  • Spinal fusion
    • External lumbar fusion
  • Microdiscectomy
  • Artificial disc implantation
  • Spinal cord stimulation
  • Pain pump insertion

To assist surgeons with these minimally invasive techniques, NHRMC has available the Mazor Robotics Renaissance System™.
