At NHRMC, radiologists use a PET/CT scan with an Axumin exam (Fluciclovine F 18) as a diagnostic test for men with suspected recurrence of prostate cancer based on rising PSA levels.
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommends this test be considered in clinical workups for suspected prostate cancer recurrence.
The PET/CT with Axumin lasts approximately 30 minutes and is offered at NHRMC Health & Diagnostics – Medical Mall. A physician order is required to schedule this diagnostic exam.
Do not eat or drink anything for 4 hours prior to the appointment. Small amounts of water are permitted only for taking medications.
Avoid any significant exercise for at least 24 hours prior to the appointment.
Day of Exam
The scan lasts 25 to 30 minutes. The Axumin injection is given while you are on the scanner, and imaging begins immediately.
