Code STEMI at New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) has improved care for thousands of heart attack patients in Wilmington and the surrounding region. NHRMC is recognized as one of the top hospitals in the nation for providing quick, comprehensive, and effective heart attack care.

The national benchmark for getting STEMI patients to intervention is 90 minutes. At NHRMC Heart Center, we cut that time in half, with an average of 42 minutes.

What Is Code STEMI?

STEMI (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction) is the most severe type of heart attack. The quicker a STEMI patient gets medical help, the less damage may occur to their heart.

Code STEMI is a program designed to help medical professionals recognize heart attacks and immediately activate a protocol that ensures patients receive lifesaving care as quickly as possible. At NHRMC, we focus on reducing heart attack treatment times to give the best chance for a full recovery.

How Code STEMI Works

The Code STEMI program works as a collaboration between paramedics and hospitals throughout the region. Our team helps identify a STEMI heart attack, and enables our emergency and cardiac teams to prepare for your arrival to provide quick intervention in our Cardiac Catheterization Lab.
