Surgery Without Blood Transfusions

New Hanover Regional Medical Center offers treatment options for cardiac surgery patients who choose not to receive blood transfusions. Whether for personal or religious reasons, we respect your right to make informed healthcare decisions based on what is right for you.

Bloodless Medicine Program for Cardiac Surgery

The NHRMC Bloodless Medicine Program allows patients to make their preferences known prior to hospitalization for cardiac surgery. You can choose not to receive whole blood or blood products as part of your medical care. You may also choose whether to accept blood fractions. This is a personal choice that should be discussed with your surgical team.

How It Works

Prior to surgery, your providers can use medications to help optimize or increase your blood supply to prepare for surgery. During surgery, your cardiovascular surgeons are able to use surgical techniques and special equipment to minimize blood loss. After surgery, your physician will use medications and other techniques to prevent blood loss and increase supply.

Your surgeon will discuss specific techniques and procedures that will be used during your procedure and answer any questions your have.

Program Enrollment

To ensure your medical team knows your preferences, we ask patients to enroll in the NHRMC Bloodless Medicine Program. You can do this by printing and completing the correct forms:

We also encourage you to document your decision using an Advance Directive or Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care

Please bring your enrollment form, consent form and any advance directive documents to your surgical consult appointment. On the day of your surgery, please bring a copy of your advance directives.
