Our Surgical Services
While some patients are candidates for newer, less invasive techniques, others may require more traditional surgeries. NHRMC Heart Center surgeons are experienced and highly skilled in every type of procedure and always use the least invasive techniques possible.
Types of cardiac surgery performed at NHRMC Heart Center include:
Open-heart surgery requires making a large incision in the chest and opening the rib cage to operate on the heart. The heart is stopped and a heart-lung bypass machine is used to maintain the heart's pumping action and move blood away from the heart while surgery is being performed.
Open-heart surgeries performed at NHRMC Heart Center include:
- Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
- Heart valve repair or replacement
- Atrial fibrillation treatment
Some patients are good candidates for off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery. This procedure is performed while the patient’s heart is still beating — eliminating the need for a heart-lung machine.
Small incisions are made between the ribs to access the heart. This is far less invasive than traditional open-heart surgery that requires a large incision and opening the breastbone to reach the heart.
Minimally invasive techniques generally require less recovery time than traditional procedures. Not all patients are good candidates for minimally invasive procedures.
Minimally invasive heart surgeries performed at NHRMC Heart Center include:
- Coronary bypass surgeries
- Heart valve repair or replacement surgeries
- Pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillators implantation
