When you have an intravascular ultrasound at New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC), you can rely on our entire team to take care of you. We perform more than 7,000 procedures each year in our Cardiac Catherization Lab.

Intravascular ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of your blood vessels. This technology enables your cardiologist to pinpoint blocked arteries in the heart. Blocked coronary arteries can cause angina (chest pain) or even a heart attack.

If you are undergoing coronary angioplasty due to chest pain or a heart attack, your doctor may perform an intravascular ultrasound after placing a stent in your blocked artery. This procedure can help confirm the stent has been placed precisely within the artery to restore blood flow to the heart tissue.
