Helping you get through a mental health crisis can involve a number of different treatment methods. At New Hanover Regional Medical Center Behavioral Health Hospital we start with a thorough evaluation done by a psychiatrist with New Hanover Psychiatry – NHRMC Physician Group.
Once assessed, we’ll develop a treatment plan that fits your needs, with a goal of stabilizing you until you can get longer term care and support. Your plan might include one or more of the following treatments.
Some psychotropic medications will help patients recover or manage their mental illness. Our doctors will work with the referring provider to ensure that you are being treated with the best medication for your illness.
Individual or group therapy can help you understand your illness and talk about how you feel and what you are going through. We’ll guide you through how you can manage these feelings.
Some patients with conditions such as mood disorders benefit from a therapy which involves sending an electrical current through the brain. This changes the brain’s chemistry and functioning, reversing imbalances that can lead to depression. Usually, ECT is recommended after anti-depressants have failed. Those who cannot take some medications are also good candidates for ECT. It is often administered three times a week, for two to four weeks. It can be done on an outpatient basis, but is also prescribed for some inpatients.
We will help coordinate your care after you are released from the hospital. This may involve a referral for ongoing care from a medical professional and/or outpatient visits to the Behavioral Health Hospital.
