Body Mass Index Calculator

Rather than relying only on the bathroom scale to tell you if you're overweight, experts say you should also know your body mass index (BMI). BMI takes into account not just your weight, but also your height to indicate body fat. The goal for most people is a BMI that's over 18 and under 25. This tool is for adults. BMIs for children and teens use age, plus height and weight.

David Schronce - NHRMC Bariatric Surgery Patient

If you have tried earnestly and repeatedly to lose weight without any sustained success you might consider bariatric surgery.

The NHRMC Bariatric Surgery Program has helped hundreds of patients improve their health and quality of life, and extend your lifespan up to 14 years.

Health Benefits

Morbidly obese patients who choose bariatric surgery:

  • 68% resolve or reduce high blood pressure
  • 59% reduction in coronary artery disease
  • 75% resolve or reduce diabetes

In comparison to those who do not have bariatric surgery:

  • 60% reduction in risk of developing all cancers
  • 50% less likely to have a heart attack
  • 49% less likely to have cardiovascular disease

Who qualifies for bariatric surgery?

Patients who meet the following criteria may qualify for bariatric surgery:

  • BMI or 35-39 with obesity related co-morbidities such as hypertension, sleep apnea or diabetes
  • 18 to 70 years old
  • BMI greater than 40
  • Non-smoker
  • Willingness to comply with all post-operative diet and follow-up recommendations

Risks of Remaining Morbidly Obese Can Outweigh the Risks of Surgery

Bariatric Surgery is a major operation, and it carries some risks. But those risks are minimized at NHRMC. More than 300 patients per year undergo life-changing surgery through the NHRMC Bariatric Surgery Program.
