During his time at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Dr. Wright was known as an innovator. He co-founded that institution’s first fetal diagnostic unit and developed the institution’s capability in fetal echocardiography, fetal Doppler and umbilical blood sampling. He invented and patented a procedure and needle guide to perform amniocentesis in the first trimester.
Dr. Wright brought that innovative spirit to Wilmington in 1990 and established the region’s first Maternal Fetal Medicine practice. Through the years, he has continued to comb the world’s scientific literature to bring the best diagnostic and therapeutic methods to our region. These include prenatal diagnosis of heart defects, central nervous system defects, vasa previa, placenta accreta, incompetent cervix, and others. His team offers state of the art first trimester fetal diagnostic imaging.
He is currently conducting research to develop simpler and more accurate ways to identify early onset gestational diabetes and to more accurately define fetal cardiac conduction times. He continues to bring to our region the latest and most comprehensive technology for noninvasive detection of genetic disorders. As the son of a NASA safety expert, Dr. Wright strives to maintain world class protocols for managing each disease and risk factor to maximize patient safety and outcomes. When he is not working, Dr. Wright has an active personal life centered on his wife, children, and church.
