As healthcare providers, our top priority is creating a safe environment for our staff along with a healing environment for our patients. As COVID-19 spreads through the community, having adequate staffing in place is crucial for our ability to manage our patients’ needs. Like all healthcare providers we are, therefore, exempt from the recently passed Families First Coronavirus Response Act and Emergency Paid Sick Leave requirements for employees who are unable to work due to circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, employees may be eligible for COVID-19 paid sick time, if they:
- Are subject to a federal, state or local quarantine or isolation order related to COVID-19
- Have been advised by a healthcare provider to self-quarantine related to COVID-19
- Are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and are seeking a medical diagnosis
If any of the situations above apply to an employee, they must contact Employee Health. If Employee Health advises the employee to return home or stay home for up to 2 weeks, the employee will be eligible for sick pay.*
Anyone who needs to remain out of work beyond the two-week period for their own illness or any other FMLA qualifying reason, will need to contact the HR Benefits team to apply for a Family Medical Leave of Absence and use paid time off.
*Sick pay will be based on the average regular and vesting hours worked for the three full pay periods prior to COVID-19 (pay periods ending February 8, February 22, and March 7). Overtime hours will not be included in the calculation. Employees will be placed on a special COVID-19 leave.
