Rachel Hayworth, MSN, RN, CHFN, Heart Failure Program Manager, received the Heart of Nursing award from the American Heart Association for August 2020. She was chosen from a very select group of extraordinary nurses who were nominated by their colleagues. Rachel was nominated by John Rommel, MD, a Cardiologist at Cape Fear Heart Associates.

John states, "Rachel is charged with improving the quality of and access to specialized heart failure (HF) care in southeastern NC. Under her leadership, NHRMC has experienced a 20% reduction in HF re-admissions, most recently has been recognized as a Get With the Guidelines-HF Silver Plus award recipient and has implemented a novel cardiogenic shock care pathway. She promotes nursing professional development by building and teaching a Certified Heart Failure Nurse (CHFN) review course in her region annually. As a result, her hospital now has 8 CHFN nurses working directly with HF patients. She has also published an article in Heart & Lung about nursing care of the peri-partum cardiomyopathy patient. Her latest project involves building artificial intelligence in a digital human to use to supplement HF patient education—that’s innovation!"

Thank you for your dedication to your patients and your community and we are certainly fortunate to have you as part of the NHRMC team. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor.
