Dozens of NHRMC providers gathered in front of NHRMC this morning for 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence to honor George Floyd. The movement is called White Coats 4 Black Lives, and participants stood, knelt and sat in silence.

On the back of his white lab coat, Dr. Jayen Bhakta, an internal medicine resident, had written a message. It read, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane,” a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Philip Brown, who streamed the event live on Facebook, said that NHRMC’s mission of Leading Our Community to Outstanding Health demands that we work to change inequities.

“We have made a huge commitment to health equity,” Dr. Brown said. “Racial tensions that exist now are not new, and its long past time to change them.”
