Richard Corbett MD

With incredible sadness, New Hanover Medical Group shares the loss of a true Southern gentleman, Dr. J. Richard Corbett.

Dr. Corbett cherished his role as Radiologist at New Hanover Medical Group's 16th Street location. He loved to share his knowledge and mentored young physicians. Our patients benefited from his gift - his skills as a radiologist were unparalleled.

His influence was felt across the region and throughout the medical community. An imaging suite was named in his honor at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport.

At UNC-Wilmington, the J. Richard Corbett Charitable Trust research funds are awarded to eligible full-time nursing faculty to: (a) encourage innovative or highly significant research endeavors; (b) provide seed money for pilot research projects that may attract funding from external sources; and (c) encourage research and scholarly development. Dr. Corbett began the trust in December of 2005. Between 2006 and 2018, more than $368,000 was awarded to faculty to fund 43 research projects. Research has resulted in peer-reviewed publications, poster sessions, and podium presentations at regional, national, and international conferences.

His incredible life can not be summed up in a few simple words - we can only say our New Hanover Medical Group family will always remember this gentle man, who cared for us all so very much. His motto was "remember who you are" - we'll strive to carry on the legacy he has left us!

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 17 at Winter Park Baptist Church.
