NHRMC Trustees Approve Resolution in Support of Efforts to Explore System’s Future

August 27, 2019

New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Board of Trustees has approved a resolution in support of efforts with New Hanover County to explore new ownership and partnership opportunities for NHRMC.

The resolution, approved at Tuesday’s meeting, encourages the county commissioners to consider the following key priorities:

  • Improving access, value and quality of care
  • Increasing the level and scope of care
  • Committing to charity care
  • Ensuring the long-term financial security of the health system while partnering with providers and maintaining a staff and culture that has contributed to the great success of the system

Additionally, the board recommended that, in evaluating options for the future of NHRMC, county commissioners consider the views of key community stakeholders, including members of the NHRMC Medical Staff.

“We support the proactive evaluation of the best way to secure the future healthcare needs of our region,” said Bobby Greer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “This resolution documents the board’s endorsement to ask the question and seek proposals – it does not take a position on the future ownership structure of the hospital.”

New Hanover County Commissioners are scheduled to meet Sept. 3, when they will discuss whether to move forward with exploring potential partners for NHRMC, and if so, approve a resolution.

This is not a vote to sell the hospital – if approved, the resolution would allow the county to accept proposals from other health systems and get more information to determine what is in the best interests of the community.
