The pediatric echocardiography laboratory presented an abstract at the 2019 NeoHeart conference hosted by Children's Hospital of Orange County in Huntington Beach, California.
The title of the abstract was Accuracy of Pediatric Echocardiography in a Regional Hospital. The abstract described a retrospective review of pediatric echocardiograms of patients transferred from NHRMC to a cardiac surgery center from November 2015 to November 2018. The review documented that the laboratory, staffed with sonographers with advanced training in pediatric echocardiography, a local pediatric cardiologist, and an Internet-based PACS for reporting and sharing with tertiary hospitals, had a diagnostic accuracy of 94%, and that all 23 emergent transfers during that time had 100% accuracy in diagnosis as verified by the receiving institution.
Kelly Alger, Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer at the Noninvasive Cardiology Lab, presented the abstract.
"Hospitals like NHRMC are often the first care center to evaluate infants with potentially lethal cardiac disease. Ms. Alger and the pediatric sonographers are to be congratulated for this high degree of diagnostic accuracy which is critical to the appropriate management of these patients," said Dr. James P. Loehr, Pediatric Cardiologist with Coastal Children’s Services and Nunnelee Pediatric Specialty Clinics.
