Dr. Jorge Gonzalez passed away on April 13, 2019, from complications of ALS. Dr. Gonzalez was a member of the house staff at NHRMC, a tenured professor of medicine at UNC Chapel Hill, and he helped to found the Tileston Clinic.
Dr. Maya Peltsverger, an endocrinologist with NHRMC Internal Medicine Specialists, summed up her thoughts in this tribute:
As I saw Dr. Gonzalez take his last breath, many thoughts and memories raced through my mind. I immediately had memories of all the good times I had as a resident under his guidance. Dr. Gonzalez was loved by all his colleagues, residents, and staff who worked closely with him and admired him for his intellect and caring demeanor. He strived relentlessly to guide us towards not just being good physicians but also good people. Dr. G loved teaching students and residents. Teaching was his way of life. He is the type of a physician, mentor, and person I wish and strive to be. Through his desire to share his knowledge in medicine and warm support, he has helped the careers of many young doctors. How he dealt with his illness will always be an example to all of us. He never complained about the pain and the inconveniences of his illness, he would rather inquire about how others were doing before we discussed him. The medical community has lost a brilliant mind, his family a dear husband, father, and a grandparent. I lost my mentor, my big supporter, my dear friend. He will be terribly missed by all. – Maya Peltsverger, MD
