Now that she has served on one more Storm Team, Women's & Children's Administrator Barbara Buechler is ready to retire, for real.
After 20 years of service to our teams, patients, families, providers and community of New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Barbara had planned her retirement send-off for earlier this month. Those plans were washed away by Hurricane Florence, giving Barbara one more opportunity to lead her team through a critical incident. Her retirement celebration is now scheduled for 12:30-2:30 p.m. on September 28 in the Betty H. Cameron Women's & Children's Hospital Lobby.
Barbara began her professional career in 1981 as a graduate of Rochester Community College where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Nursing followed by a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Winona (Minn.) State University in 1987 and a Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2006.
Barbara’s clinical expertise was founded in caring for women and children as she began her nursing journey in Neonatal Intensive Care Units prior to moving to leadership roles. A natural leader, Barbara’s milestones include a Women of Achievement nomination, Razor Walker Award, NHRMC Leader of Excellence, grand opening of Betty H. Cameron Women’s & Children’s Hospital and NHRMC Baby Friendly Designation, to name a few.
Always a leader encouraging her team to strive for greatness above yesterday’s achievements, she has been a true example for compassion and advocacy for children and families. Barbara entrusts this passion as she passes the torch for excellence to the teams she has mentored for two decades.
Barbara’s retirement plan includes some well-deserved time with her mother in Minnesota and in her favorite role as “Mamair” to her six beautiful granddaughters; affectionately known as her “Girl Gang.”
