The Pediatrics Unit in the Women’s and Children’s Hospital is more colorful than ever.

Throughout the years many of the ceiling tiles in the Pediatrics unit have been painted nautical scenes - a small touch to create a bright, kid-friendly atmosphere in an otherwise sterile environment.

Jessie Smith, a mother of a PICU patient, loved the ceiling tiles but noticed their sporadic placement. She made note of the absence of painted ceiling tiles in many of the patient rooms and other large corridors. Having daughters in the Girl Scouts, she orchestrated a service project to paint additional tiles. Her efforts spread among all the Girl Scout troops in New Hanover County, leading to the creation of 80 new ceiling tiles. Recently the Girls Scouts stopped by the hospital to donate their creations, which have now been hung throughout the unit.

“We are grateful for the generosity of the Girl Scout troops,” said Michele Erich, music therapist and child life specialist. “At NHRMC we are dedicated to make every patient experience the best it can possibly be. With the help of the Scouts, the Pediatrics Unit has become a much brighter place for all.”
