Craniofacial, Cleft Patients Treated to 'Wonder' Movie Screening

December 08, 2017

Living with facial differences isn't always easy. But connecting with other families who are facing the same challenges can be helpful.

So Dr. Michael Jaskolka, Medical Director of New Hanover Regional Medical Center's Cleft and Craniofacial Team, invited his patients and their families to a special screening of 'Wonder' on Saturday at Stone Theatres' The Pointe 14.

Nearly 200 patients and family members filled the theater to watch the story of Auggie, who has facial differences, and his family. Auggie's arrival at a new school was met with stares, shunning, and unabashed bullying. Some of Dr. Jaskolka's patients could identify with the challenges Auggie faced. And siblings could identify with Auggie's older sister, who never received as much attention from her parents.

Dr. Jaskolka held the event to give these families a chance to meet each other and recognize that facial differences aren't as rare as they might believe.
