This activity has been designed to help not only differentiate between loneliness and social isolation, but to also identify tools useful in measuring their prevalence. Findings from the national "Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults: Opportunities for the Health Care System" report, released in 2020 by the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, will be highlighted. In addition, interventions that are useful in addressing loneliness and social isolation in the older adult will be discussed.
Objectives:
- Participants of this activity will assess a gain in knowledge related to the effects of social isolation on the aged.
- Differentiate between loneliness and social isolation.
- Identify trends and risks related to loneliness and social isolation among older adults.
- Learn how to use and interpret validated tools to measure loneliness and social isolation.
- Name approaches to interventions to address loneliness and social isolation among older adults.
Join us on this journey as we explore the impact that these issues have on the older population. NHRMC staff should register via NetLearning.
