This activity has been developed to assist in addressing the Healthy NC 2030 health indicator initiative to reduce the overall teen birth rate for North Carolinians. The need to increase access to not only contraception, but to information and services available to improve youth sexual health, is paramount to improving the overall health and well-being of our teen population. During this activity, participants will learn about the current trends in teen pregnancy, as well as evidence-based practice for adolescent contraceptive use. The effectiveness of contraceptive methods available for teens as well as research-based strategies that clinical practitioners may apply to increase youth access to both contraceptive and reproductive health information and services will be discussed. Youth-friendly provider practices have been proven to impact adolescent reproductive health outcomes by assisting in preventing unintentional pregnancies as well as promoting safer sex practices within our adolescent population.
Objectives:
- Participants of this activity will assess an increase in knowledge related to identifying current trends in teen pregnancy and contraceptive use as well as strategies to improve access to contraception as well as other available resources.
- Describe current trends in teen pregnancy and adolescent contraceptive use.
- Compare and contrast the effectiveness of contraceptive methods available for teens.
- Identify 3 or more research-based strategies that clinical practitioners may apply to increase youth access to contraceptive and reproductive health information and services.
- List 5 or more characteristics of youth-friendly providers or practices.
- Explain how youth-friendly provider practices can impact adolescent reproductive health outcomes.
