NHRMC Volunteer Placement Areas
Our volunteers are often the first person our patients and visitors see when they come through our doors. These interactions can leave a lasting impression. Volunteering in patient and visitor support positions involves assisting those coming to our facilities to their destinations, providing information, answering questions and offering emotional support. Positions include:
Ambassador
Greet patients, visitors and staff, give verbal directions or escort to destination when possible, provides wheelchair transport when appropriate.
Discharge/Errands
Transport discharged patients; perform miscellaneous errands; delivering flowers, snacks, medical records, mail, e-mail, newspapers and collecting charts.
Emergency Room Volunteers
Serve as liaison between staff and the patient's family and friends. Assists staff by helping to make those waiting as comfortable as possible.
Information Desks
Answer phone, give directions throughout the building as well as into other areas and provide computer-based patient information in compliance with HIPAA guidelines.
Kangaroo Kapers Facilitator
Oversee class for children ages 3-8 who are about to become a big brother or sister (twice monthly). Assistant - Hands-on help with children, distribution of materials, etc. Assist facilitator as directed.
Patient Advocate Liaison (PAL)
Specially selected/trained volunteers work closely with and under the direction of unit nurse manager providing bedside support to patients. Reports needs/requests to Nurse, unit manager coordinator.
Pet Therapy Program/NHRMC
Volunteer and dog must meet and follow certain criteria to perform this duty. Work directly with Healing Arts program coordinator. Visit in specific patient areas with dog, closely following all procedures.
Rehabilitation Hospital
Assist staff by transporting patients to therapy, assist and observe during therapy sessions, change sheets and pillows between sessions.
Rehabilitation Outpatient Services
Greet patients, alert therapist of patient arrival, answer phone, take messages, and assist with light clerical work.
Surgical Pavilion/Surgical Waiting
Escort patient and/or family to appropriate destination. Explain pager, tracking board, and what the family can expect throughout the day. Transport volunteers discharge patients via wheelchair.
Unit-Based Volunteers
For those interested in direct patient contact, many units throughout NHRMC utilize volunteers to visit with patients, offer blankets, offer food or drink if appropriate, assist in ordering a meal, help get answers to questions and assist the staff.
Volunteer Nurse/NHRMC and NHRMC Orthopedic Hospital
This position requires a current NC nursing license and BLS certification. Nurses are assigned to areas of expertise, or interest, for a minimum 4-6 hour shift per week. Volunteer RNs also support the hospital by providing flu shots during times of need.
Zimmer Cancer Center Reception
Greet and escort patients in the Zimmer Cancer Center to appropriate treatment area. Assist front desk staff in managing incoming patients. Round on those in waiting room to provide updates and answer questions. Make coffee and keep waiting room neat and cheerful.
