New Hanover Regional Medical Center is southeastern North Carolina's leading provider of patient-focused, award-winning healthcare services. NHRMC, a public, not-for-profit hospital is a teaching hospital; and tertiary care center for a seven-county area; and provides care to everyone in need regardless of ability to pay.

NHRMC Emergency Department

The Emergency Department at New Hanover Regional Medical Center is the region's only Level II Trauma Center. The Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to emergency injuries and illnesses.

The Emergency Department is supported by NHRMC Emergency Services including New Hanover Regional EMS - one of only three hospital-operated EMS systems in North Carolina - which provides advanced pre-hospital care and emergency transport. Services are provided by AirLink helicopter, VitaLink’s adult and pediatric intensive care vehicles, ambulance, or patient care transport.

The main NHRMC campus on 17th Street also includes the Heart Center, Zimmer Cancer Center, Betty H. Cameron Women's & Children's Hospital, Behavioral Health Hospital and Rehabilitation Hospital.

Services & Amenities

Visiting a Patient

Visiting hours at NHRMC are flexible, however, they generally end at 9 p.m. each night to allow for a restful and safe environment. Some areas within NHRMC also have their own guidelines for visitors depending on specific situations.

Intensive Care Units

Loved ones are welcome to visit patients daily in the ICU during the following hours:

  • 5-6 a.m.
  • 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • 3-6 p.m.
  • 9-11 p.m.

Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit

Loved ones are welcome to visit their family in the CVICU daily from: 

  • 10-10:30 a.m.
  • 2-2:30 p.m.
  • 5-5:30 p.m.
  • 8:30-9 p.m.

Visitor Guidelines

  • Patients are allowed two visitors at a time. 
  • To allow for quiet time, overnight stays are not generally allowed. 
  • Visitors should use phones located outside the units to request assistance about visiting an individual patient.

Parking & Directions

Free parking is available throughout the main 17th Street campus. Shuttle carts are available in all parking areas to take you to your destination.

Getting Around NHRMC

Additional transportation is available to patients and visitors needing to get to other areas on the NHRMC campus. A courtesy shuttle operated by our adult volunteers is available to drive you to locations on the NHRMC campus, the SECU Family House, Business Center and physicians' offices within a mile of the 17th Street facility.
