Trauma Criteria

Trauma I Criteria

  • Shock
  • Respiratory distress
  • Airway compromise
  • Unresponsiveness (GCS less than 8) with potential for multiple injuries
  • Penetrating wound to head, neck or torso

The Trauma Attending Physician & Senior Surgical Resident response time is 20 minutes

Trauma II Criteria

  • Proximal amputations
  • Burns meeting institutional transfer criteria
  • Vascular compromise
  • Crush to chest or pelvis
  • Two or more proximal long bone fractures
  • Spinal cord injury with paralysis
  • Falls greater than 20 feet

The following may be considered for Trauma II activation at the discretion of the ED Physician or Trauma Surgeon:

  • Extremes of age, (< 5="" or=""> 70)
  • Pedestrian struck by motor vehicle
  • Motor vehicle crash with
    • Ejection (includes motorcycle)
    • Rollover
    • Speed greater than 40 mph; or
    • Death at the scene

ED MD or Senior Surgical Resident calls Trauma II

Senior Surgical Resident response time is 30 minutes
