History

Founded in 1739 on the banks of the Cape Fear River, historic downtown Wilmington is home to a number of historical landmarks including Bellamy Mansion and the U.S.S. Battleship North Carolina. Strolling downtown during the day offers a variety of shops, galleries, museums, theaters and restaurants. At night, the picturesque downtown comes alive with some of the area's best night life.

For those more interested in the great outdoors, Wilmington and the Cape Fear region have plenty to offer. Beach goers can choose from miles of beaches that are easily accessible while the Cape Fear River and the Intracoastal Waterway are perfect for water sports. For those interested to see what's in the water, a trip to the Fort Fisher Aquarium offers a view of local marine life. As for nature enthusiasts, an assortment of trails and local parks offer a glimpse of the rich coastal plants and wildlife environment.
