Clinical Pastoral Education
Accredited by The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.
Clinical Pastoral Education is interfaith professional education for ministry. It brings theological students and ministers of all faiths into supervised encounter with those in crisis. Out of an intense involvement with those in need, and the feedback from peers and teachers, students develop new awareness of themselves and of the needs of those to whom they minister. From theological reflection on specific human situations, they gain a new understanding of ministry. Within the interdisciplinary team process of helping others, they develop skills in interpersonal and interprofessional relationships.
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at New Hanover Regional Medical Center is an intense and rewarding educational opportunity. Students learn the art of hospital chaplaincy as they minister to diverse people coping with illnesses and injuries. Experience at the bedside is complemented by formal classroom instruction, along with reflection, discussion, and evaluation with other students and at least two different supervisors during the year.
This is graduate level theological education with a practical focus.
The Spiritual Care Department at NHRMC focuses on outcome-oriented chaplaincy. This model of care recognizes chaplains as integral and respected members of the care team. Chaplains document their interactions with patients and family members so nurses and physicians can better understand the patient’s needs and the chaplain’s role in their holistic healing and well-being.
The CPE program at NHRMC is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. ACPE training combines the practice of pastoral care with individual supervision, peer group reflection, and access to a variety of learning resources and interdisciplinary relationships.
