New Hanover Regional Medical Center offers research support to medical residents pursuing quality improvement and research studies.  Our research team includes study coordinators, medical librarians, data collectors, statisticians and others who can help residents with study methodology and administrative logistics.

Accreditation Council for GME Guidelines

The body that reviews and accredits residency programs, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), encourages residents to:

  • Critically review and interpret current literature
  • Understand how and when to integrate evidence-based medicine
  • Effectively examine clinical and patient outcomes
  • Systematically identify areas for improvement and actively engages in quality improvement (QI) projects

All residents are required to complete at least one research or quality improvement project, but many choose to go above and beyond this expectation.

Residents who demonstrate the highest levels of competence contribute to the body of medical knowledge by participating in conferences, contributing to peer-reviewed medical literature, and leading quality improvement projects for their practices.

Research Process

Residents work with a faculty mentor, and can choose to work on quality improvement projects, original research, or both. Residents may receive instruction on study methodology as a group or in individual meetings. All residents are supported through the process of obtaining Institutional Review Board approval (for research) or exemption (for quality improvement projects). All residents should meet with research staff well in advance of their expected presentation or publication. Residents should meet with their Study Coordinator and Statistician at the same time to assist with study design and avoid multiple meetings. Make an appointment with research staff:

  • One year prior to publishing or presenting broad scale QI projects and minimal risk research (such as retrospective chart reviews or certain questionnaires)
  • Two years prior to publishing or presenting more interventional research, such as randomized controlled trials, drug or device intervention, or hospital wide QI projects


Surgery residents present projects in October of their PGY2 and PGY4 year. The program strongly encourages and supports resident presentations at local, state, and nationwide conferences.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

OB/GYN residents present the status of their projects in April of each year. Often, residents of different PGY levels work together on the same project, to ensure there is ample time to complete the project.

Internal Medicine

Internal Medicine residents present projects in March of their PGY3 year. Residents interested in fellowships routinely seek out original research assistance in their intern year, while others often prefer working on QI projects.

Family Medicine

Family medicine residents present projects in February of their PGY3 year. The program has a strong QI emphasis and encourages regular practice assessment to improve patient outcomes, but original research, as well as collaborative work on FPINs is encouraged.
