An abdominal aortic aneurysm is called a silent killer because it often doesn’t present any recognizable symptoms, and a sudden rupture is usually deadly.

NHRMC has worked actively with our our healthcare professionals to help meet the mission of reducing the risk of death by abdominal aortic aneurysms through physician advocacy, screening at-risk patients and implementing public education programs.

AAA Screening Efforts and Roger Kueffer's Legacy

In 2015, Mary Lou Kueffer lost her beloved husband, Roger, following the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Like most patients, Roger had no idea he had an aneurysm.

Mary Lou vowed to honor Roger by increasing awareness of AAA, and was the catalyst for creating a program to assure that at risk patients were screened for AAA with a simple, painless ultrasound exam.

Since its inception we have screened more than 5,000 patients - 300 of which have tested positive. We have successfully managed their care, meaning 300 lives have been saved to date.
