RN Refresher

As part of our efforts to provide Continuing Education for healthcare professionals, SEAHEC offers nurses the tools they need to provide the latest standards in care. The RN Refresher program is offered through a partnership with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a part self-study correspondence and part clinical practicum with a preceptor.

Eligible Program Participants

  • Nurses residing in New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, or Pender County who hold or have previously held a Nursing license in the state of North Carolina
  • Nurses desiring a basic medical-surgical nursing review
  • Nurses seeking to change practice areas
  • Nurses with lapsed or inactive licenses for 5 years or more
  • Nurses who have not practiced nursing in 5 or more years

Self-Study Correspondence Course (Didactic Portion)

  • Administrated through the UNC-Chapel Hill Friday Center
  • Enroll at any time
  • Enrollment begins the day your application is processed and ends 9 months later
  • Students must have held an RN license at some time
  • Content consists of 23 modules (or lessons) – including medical-surgical topics, physician assessment, pharmacology review and medication administrations
  • The modules are available online or by mail
  • Each module concludes with a final exam
  • There is no comprehensive final exam to sit for at the end of the course
  • The self-study correspondence course is approved for 14 CEUs (140 CNE Nursing Contact Hours)

Clinical Practicum with Preceptor (Clinical Portion)

  • Didactic portion must be completed before clinical portion can be started
  • Consists of 160 hours working directly with a clinical preceptor
  • The preceptor must be present whenever the student is delivering nursing care
  • A clinical checklist is used as a guide for experiences during the practicum
  • Students must carry their own malpractice insurance
  • Orientation classes, which require pre-registration, are offered monthly at no charge
