Graduate Medical Education

Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center is proud to serve as the Wilmington, NC campus of the UNC School of Medicine Medical Doctorate Program.

South East Area Health Education Center (SEAHEC) provides administrative oversight of four accredited Graduate Medical Education programs: 

These programs provide residency and undergraduate medical teaching, as well as continuing education for healthcare providers in our region.

Our full-time faculty, members of the UNC School of Medicine, are permanently based in Wilmington with responsibility for our teaching programs. Additionally, a faculty consisting of private practicing physicians participate actively in our teaching programs.

Psychiatry Residency

We are also proud to offer one of the few combined military/civilian psychiatry residency programs in the country.

Pharmacy Residency 

The Pharmacy Residency programs at New Hanover Regional Medical Center offer nine residency positions each year, all of which have undergone the ASHP accreditation process. Through our program, you will develop skills to become a clinician, educator and leader in the pharmacy profession.

Clinical Pastoral Education

New Hanover Regional Medical Center also offers an interfaith professional education program for ministry. The Clinical Pastoral Education residency program is accredited by The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to enter one of our programs, you must meet the minimum selection criteria described in our policy on Resident eligibility and selection (located in our House Staff Manual). Recruitment is coordinated by each individual program.

Individuals applying for any of our programs must hold an appropriate degree for the program to which they apply. If you hold a foreign medical degree, a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is also required. In addition to these institutional requirements, each program has specific eligibility requirements that must be satisfied.

Applicants for employment as a New Hanover Regional Medical Center resident or visiting resident must successfully pass reference and background screenings as a condition of that assignment/employment.

  1. Applicants should have passed USMLE/COMLEX Part 1
  2. USMLE/COMLEX 2 must be completed
  3. All applicants must be eligible for a Training License from the North Carolina Medical Board. (International graduates must have a valid ECFMG certificate, and all verifications must be in English or translated with a notarized verification of authenticity)
  4. All applicants must be eligible to work in the United States (Citizens or Permanent Residents)
