Medical Missions & Community Service
For the past several years, the NHRMC Family Medicine Residency program has offered a great opportunity in global health. Residency program faculty from the Wilmington campus offer a one week medical mission experience in the Dominican Republic hosted by Solid Rock International.
Solid Rock International began as an organization in the early 1990s. Its desire is to holistically serve the poor in the Dominican Republic by focusing on all aspects of health. Volunteers travel to different rural locations each day, providing and assisting with outpatient medical care for those in need. This is a great fit for doctors, nurses, students, and Spanish-speakers. Non-medical team members assist with organization in the clinics, patient throughput, and entertaining the children.
The team is comprised of attending physicians, residents, clinical staff and even families. They begin planning for their trip well in advance by coordinating necessary supplies and medications. Residents find this a very rewarding experience.
As in many communities, some populations have difficulty accessing and navigating the medical system. In the Wilmington area, there are several community clinics where residents can choose to volunteer their services.
St. Mary Clinic
Residents help provide urgent medical and dental care for the uninsured, who are below 200% of the poverty guidelines.
Local Sporting Events
Due to the mild climate and flat terrain, Wilmington hosts multiple major events yearly, including an Ironman, Boston-qualifying marathon, the Carolina Cup (largest stand up paddleboard race on the east coast) and numerous other surfing, biking and racing events. New Hanover Regional Medical Center sponsors many of these events and our residents provide the medical support.
Other Local Opportunities
New Hanover Regional Medical Center hosts multiple community outreach events, and all residents are invited to participate. These include community health screenings, food insecurity prevention activities and other community education events.
