Curriculum

Along with the various program faculty who participate in resident education, we are very fortunate to have an active group of community preceptors who provide teaching to our residents on several of the subspecialty rotations.

Our curriculum follows a 13 block rotation schedule with each block being 4 weeks in length with the exception of the Night Float blocks. In the second and third year, residents typically cover one weekend night with in house call every 6 weeks on average.

The outline of our rotations for each year is as follows:


First Year Rotations: Mostly Hospital Based

  • Orientation - 4 weeks
  • Family Medicine Inpatient Service*: 12 weeks (3 blocks)
  • Emergency Medicine: 4 weeks
  • Inpatient Pediatrics: 8 weeks (2 blocks)
  • Obstetrics: 8 weeks (2 blocks)
  • Intensive/Critical Care*: 4 weeks
  • General Surgery: 4 weeks
  • Community Medicine/Health Equity I: 4 weeks
  • Geriatrics: 4 weeks


Second Year Rotations: Mostly Community Based

  • Family Medicine Inpatient Service:  8 weeks (2 blocks)
  • Ambulatory Pediatrics: 4 weeks
  • Behavioral Medicine: 4 weeks
  • Health Systems Management/ Health Equity II: 4 weeks
  • Electives: 8 weeks (2 blocks)
  • Gynecology: 4 weeks
  • POCUS: 4 weeks
  • Ambulatory Family Medicine: 8 weeks (2 blocks)
  • FM Night Float: 4 weeks (2 week blocks)
  • Musculoskeletal Medicine: 4 weeks (2 week blocks)


Third Year Rotations: Mostly Community Based

  • Family Medicine Inpatient Service: 8 weeks (2 blocks)
  • Behavioral Medicine II: 4 weeks
  • Pediatric Subspecialties: 4 weeks
  • Ambulatory Family Medicine: 8 weeks (2 blocks)
  • Special Populations/ Health Equity III: 4 weeks
  • Musculoskeletal Medicine: 4 weeks (2 week blocks)
  • FM Night Float: 4 weeks (2 week blocks)
  • Electives: 16 weeks (4 blocks)

Rural

Beginning July 2024, the Novant Health Residency in Family Medicine in Wilmington, North Carolina will have a rural residency training track!  Located 20 miles north of Wilmington in Burgaw, the rural track will accept 2 residents per year to train at Black River Health Services.  Black River Health Service is a non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center that provides comprehensive care to residents of southeastern North Carolina.  Residents will also spend time at both Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center as well as Novant Health Pender Medical Center in Burgaw.
