New Hanover Regional Medical Center is offering free smoking cessation classes quarterly.
When you quit using tobacco, your body begins to change. Within minutes, you start to recover from its harmful effects and start on the path to a healthier life. After only two weeks, your circulation and breathing improve and walking becomes easier. After a year, your excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker and your risk of a heart attack is greatly reduced.
The one-hour classes are designed to provide resources and support to help you quit smoking. Each class is taught by a respiratory therapist and pharmacist and includes information on:
- How to change behaviors
- Nicotine replacement therapy
Attendees will learn about the health risks of smoking, benefits of quitting, and ways to help you quit smoking. The class will take place in the first floor class room at the Cape Fear Heart Associates and will be led by Tony Bollhorst, respiratory therapist and COPD navigator and Rachel Thomas, PharmD, outpatient pharmacist.
All classes will be held in the first floor classroom at NHRMC Physician Group - Cape Fear Heart Associates, 1415 Physicians Drive, Wilmington. You do not need to be a NHRMC patient to attend. They are free to all participants. During the sessions, you will have the option to purchase nicotine patches, gum and lozenges at a reduced cost.
