Registered Dietitians at NHRMC are part of the interdisciplinary care team working to support the treatment and prevention of disease. Our dietitians keep up with the latest research to support evidence-based practice.
Our primary roles are to:
- Provide medical nutrition therapy to nutritionally at-risk patients
- Provide nutrition education to patients, families and staff throughout New Hanover Regional Medical Center, NHRMC Orthopedic Hospital and Pender Memorial Hospital
- Work with Food and Nutrition Management staff to provide education and support the appropriate use of medical food in the facility
Our registered dietitians work with patients who are hospitalized as well as those who come for outpatient services at the Zimmer Cancer Center, Cardiac Rehabilitation and Nunnelee Pediatric Clinic. Our wellness dietitian serves NHRMC staff at our Employee Fitness Center and Employee Health Clinic.
Our team embodies a wide range of interests and specialties, including five certified nutrition support clinicians, a certified specialist in oncology, and a certified adolescent weight management dietitian.
Our RDs are represented throughout the organization. We are active on various committees, including the Critical Care committee, Food and Nutrition Management Patient Satisfaction committee, Nursing Congress, several Service of Operational Excellence committees, Clinical Informatics Council, Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee, Nutrition Support Team, and the PQCNC breastfeeding support committee.
Continuing education opportunities are made available throughout the year. These include webinars, local and state conferences, and 1-2 national conferences per year.
Registered Dietitians at NHRMC provide interactive educational opportunities in the community and to NHRMC staff, volunteers and visitors throughout the year. RDs participate in National Nutrition Month activities, community health fairs, media interviews, and wellness initiatives and challenges.
Additionally, we provide supervised clinical practice experiences to dietetic intern students from UNC Chapel Hill and East Carolina University.
