The inpatient Nephrology unit of New Hanover Regional Medical Center provides 24 hour continuous, comprehensive nursing care to acute and chronic renal failure patients, including the peritoneal and hemodialysis population. The population also varies to include medical, surgical and telemetry patients. The interdisciplinary health team reviews patient progress daily to achieve positive outcomes.

The Nephrology unit consists of a professional staff of Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses (RNs and LPNs).  Additional support staff within the health care team include Nursing Assistants (NAs), Unit Clerks (UCs), and Patient Care Technicians.

Other members of the interdisciplinary health team include the Southeastern Nephrology Associates group of 8 Physicians, a Physician Assistant, and an Adult Nurse Practitioner, Case Managers, Social Workers, Respiratory Therapists, Rehabilitation Therapists (ST, OT, PT) and other physicians.

The average nurse patient ratio is 1:5 for the 24-hour continuum of care. The amount of staff maintained on the schedule is reflective of projected patient census and acuity. Daily staffing level and assignments are adjusted according to variances in patient volume, acuity and special patient care needs.
