The laboratory department is committed to providing the highest level of patient care by ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of test results.
Our main laboratory, in a spacious and naturally lit area, performs 1.5 million to 2 million tests per year.
We hire the following positions:
- Medical laboratory scientists
- Medical laboratory technicians
- Technical assistants
We have a high-tech core lab with an automated front-end loader system and the newest chemistry equipment available. We continually invest in new technology, performing new method evaluation regularly to ensure the delivery of accurate results.
General bacteriology, mycology, limited ASP and PCR testing are all performed in the lab. As a Level II Trauma Center, we have a busy Blood Bank which is automated with a PROVUE. Our Histology and Anatomic Pathology Lab has five pathologists and a flow cytometry lab.
The Emergency Department has a RAPIDLab®. We also do testing in the operating rooms, and intraoperative ITPH during parathyroid surgery.
We use the Horizon Lab™ integrated laboratory information system from McKesson and 60-inch monitors to analyze pending logs. Stat orders automatically color code to alert techs to specimens they need to process.
Because our lab is automated, our medical laboratory scientists can focus on providing accurate, timely results rather than performing manual tasks like pipetting and loading machines.
Opportunity for Growth
We support those who wish to advance within our department. Our department provides opportunities to train into resource technologist positions and laboratory managers.
We serve as a clinical training site for Coastal Carolina College's MLT program.
New nurses receive a special 90-minute laboratory orientation during their nursing orientation week so they can become familiar with lab procedures. This enables us all to work together efficiently to provide exceptional patient-focused care.
We have a large point-of-care testing program that is supervised out of the lab. A point-of-care coordinator and two technologists oversee the program.
NHRMC offers an Employee Tuition Assistance Program for courses of study that lead to licensure or degree. Several online schools offer two-year web-based programs that give MLTs the opportunity to become a medical scientist.
We have labs at the NHRMC campus, NHRMC Orthopedic Hospital, and Pender Memorial Hospital, providing diverse practice settings and giving you the opportunity to choose a smaller or larger environment, depending on your interests.
