The inpatient acute care Geriatrics Unit of New Hanover Regional Medical Center provides 24 hour continuous, comprehensive nursing care to acute medical-surgical patients. The interdisciplinary health team reviews the patients' progress in daily patient care conferences.
Geriatrics nursing personnel includes a professional staff of Registered Nures and Licensed Practical Nurses competent to provide care within the scope of their professional practice. Unit Clerks, Nursing Assistants and Patient Care Technicians complete the nursing staff complement of the unit.
Other members of the interdisciplinary health team include Case Managers, Social Workers, Nutritionists, Rehabilitation Therapists (ST, OT, PT), Physicians, and Movement Healing Arts Therapists.
The average nurse patient ratio is 1:5 patients on Geriatrics for the 24-hour continuum of care. The amount of staff maintained on the schedule is reflective of projected patient census and acuity. Daily staffing level and assignments are adjusted according to variances in patient volume, acuity and special patient care needs.
