Message from John: NHRMC and Novant Health to Begin Fulfilling Shared Mission

NHRMC Teamwork

On Monday, New Hanover Regional Medical Center is set to become part of Novant Health. This historic step for healthcare in our region brings together two organizations dedicated to a common purpose.

When we become one, we will share a mission to improve the health of our communities, one person at a time. It is a mission that aligns with the mission that has guided us for the past several years: to lead our community to outstanding health.

Our mission has driven us, individually, and organizationally, to continually look for ways to improve patient safety and satisfaction while also seeking to eliminate the health disparities that exist throughout our community.

We are fortunate to have found a partner inspired by the same purpose and with the strength to help us pursue it in new and exciting ways.

  • NHRMC: Leading Our Community to Outstanding Health
  • Novant Health: Novant Health exists to improve the health of our communities, one person at a time.

The vision, values and commitments that define NHRMC are also reflected in those that shape the culture of Novant Health.

NHRMC’s commitments include “achieving excellence for all” and “health and vitality for all.” The Novant Health vision defines this as providing “the most remarkable patient experience in every dimension, every time.” It’s a call to see every encounter as a critical part of what we do, and how we want to do it. It’s what we want for ourselves and for our patients.

Our values define what is important to achieving our mission and vision. Novant Health’s values are similar to those outlined in NHRMC’s values and commitments. They include compassion, teamwork, personal excellence, and diversity and inclusion.

Novant Health’s values also include courage, calling on the team to act boldly.

I have seen the courage of our team every day since I arrived in Wilmington. Healthcare is not for the timid, nor is the business of healthcare.  Courage is a trait we have acquired, nurtured, and employed to serve and protect our community. Just in the past few years, NHRMC has demonstrated unflinching courage as we stared down hurricanes, bravely charted a new path for healthcare in our region, and led our community through a once-in-a-century pandemic.

As we launch into this partnership with Novant Health, courage officially becomes one of our core values. Through courage, we are empowered to innovate, achieve and lead.

As we continue to fight for improved access for our community, world-class healthcare for all, and the human connection that guides every interaction with our healthcare system, realize that we are gaining 29,000 allies in that effort.

I look forward to pursuing our mission and vision with you as, together, we do remarkable things.

My mother, a hospice pt, with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, with a completely failing G tube was placed in a hallway bed, with no one to even address her needs. I find this a very poor way to treat any pt. I would honestly be ashamed of the way your ER staff treats and addresses pts. They totally left her unattended for 2 hours!
