Why You Need a Primary Care Physician

Primary Care Physicians

If I were at a doctor’s appointment with a family member, I would expect certain things from their physician. I would expect them to be treated with respect and have their questions answered in language understood by a non-medical professional.

You want to build a relationship with your primary care physician. When you trust your doctor, the two of you can work together to keep you as healthy as possible.

Many aspects of your life affect your health, and a physician who knows your personal history may be better able to identify health concerns earlier. A physician might see warning signals in your family history or notice a change in behavior or appearance that could indicate a medical issue. This type of relationship can be built over time with a professional you trust.

As a primary care physician, I aim to develop a rapport with my patients. As they get to know me and I get to know them, patients will become comfortable discussing medical issues and will grow more confident that I will guide them in the right direction. You should expect this from your primary care physician, too.

Your doctor will let you know what health screenings are appropriate given your age and risk factors. Many diseases, including breast cancer, colon cancer, heart disease, etc., are significantly more likely to affect you if a close relative has been diagnosed with it. However, many of these diseases can be detected early through screenings. Those screenings can be critical to a longer, healthier life.
At some time, you will likely need the care of a specialist. Your primary care physician should be connected to specialists who will provide you with the best care possible. The 200+ primary care and specialty providers of NHRMC Physician Group use the same computer system and electronic medical record as New Hanover Regional Medical Center, the region’s primary care center. And you can access your most important medical records through NHRMC MyChart, which also includes a tool where you send a private message to your doctor at any time from anywhere.

Every time I think about delivering patient care, I think about my family member, and whether I’m treating my patients the way I would want my mother, brother, or father to be treated. Each patient is more than just an appointment – each patient is a person who deserves to be treated with kindness and compassion.

Our doctors at NHRMC Physician Group build one-on-one relationships with our patients. But we also work together when necessary to make sure that you can receive immediate attention if your primary care doctor is not immediately available.

If you don’t have a primary care physician, call one today. Your primary care physician is your guide to healthcare. Don’t wait until you’re in a desperate position to seek medical advice. Find a physician you trust, and work together to plan your healthcare. Then, if a medical issue arises, your primary care physician will be ready to make sure you get the best care available.
