The Sunshine Award was created by Novant Health to honor non-nursing staff who provide exceptional compassionate care. The award complements the Daisy Award, which is presented to a nursing team member who has gone above and beyond for a patient.
New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s first Sunshine Award honoree is Tony Dunn, a volunteer in the Surgical Pavilion waiting room.
Tony was nominated by the Dayle Blackburn, the father of a blind man who came to NHRMC for back surgery at 5 a.m. on a Tuesday.
Mr. Blackburn wrote:
“We were greeted by the nicest caring fellow that you could imagine - Mr. Tony Dunn. He went out of his way to pay special attention to my son, Jason. Tony insisted on doing all the 'heavy work' -- pushing Jason in the wheelchair, getting a blanket for him, answering several questions and providing a friendly resource - just being a buddy to a blind patient in a strange environment at 5 a.m.”
The father wrote about how comfortable his son felt with Tony.
He closed with:
“It was just another shift, another day for Tony Dunn, but a warm and caring arm for my blind son. Thank you, Tony!”
