Brandi Buchanan excels when it comes to taking care of cardiac patients – and teaching others how to do the same.
Before Brandi joined the NHRMC Home Care team, there wasn’t a cardiac and telemonitoring program. So she decided to create one. As the cardiac program coordinator, she leads the orientation to the program for nurses when they join the Home Care team. She’s clear and helpful, giving new nurses comprehensive goals and attainable expectations to ensure that patients will continue to receive a high level of care once they leave the hospital for home.
“Brandi is a true gem of a human being,” said Lisa White, pediatric program coordinator at NHRMC Home Care. “She exudes genuine kindness to others without pretense.”
That includes people who she doesn’t even know. Recently, Brandi was driving down Market Street in Wilmington in a downpour when a car crash occurred a few cars in front of her and a man got out of his car and collapsed.
Brandi immediately got out of her car and ran to him to help. She realized he was in cardiac arrest and began giving him CPR. She also gave him two rounds of shocks with help from the Wilmington Fire Department.
Brandi spent 20 minutes treating this man – a person whom she had never met – simply because he needed help. The man recovered fully from the accident, and the Wilmington Police Department awarded Brandi a Citizen’s Award for her help.
It is not an overstatement to say that Brandi helped save this man’s life. It is also not an overstatement to say that Brandi is the person you want in your corner during a car crash, a new job, or an average weekday. She will step in to help without hesitation, and she will do so with unflinching kindness and professionalism.
For that reason and many more, Brandi Buchanan is this month’s Employee of Excellence.
