Nick Boehne won’t be the most talkative person in the room. But he will be the person whose calm, quiet dedication to serving his patients makes an impact that words never would.
Nick, a technician in the emergency department, “is always a calming influence in a chaotic environment,” said Jeffrey Eder, ED nurse.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nick’s tranquil demeanor helped NHRMC deliver remarkable care to a COVID patient.
On this particular day, a 90-year-old patient was brought into the emergency department. The patient was scared, struggling to breathe, and – of course – alone.
But then Nick stepped in. He outfitted himself in personal protective equipment and went into the patient’s room, holding his hand and talking to him. He also updated the patient’s family members on his condition, providing comfort for a worried family who knew they wouldn’t be able to see their family member.
This behavior is standard practice for Nick, who often works in triage, one of the most stressful parts of the emergency department. But he stays calm regardless of the situation.
“He has a talent for talking to our patients in a way that reassures them and keeps them informed about their care,” Eder said. “Nick approaches each patient with professionalism and genuine caring, and our patients and their families love him.”
Nick pays special attention to patients who are being cared for in alternate care spaces, bringing them an extra blanket or a drink. He works hard to make sure every patient he cares for is as comfortable as possible.
He also goes out of his way to help lighten his colleagues’ workload. Coworkers will often find that Nick has already completed a task before they even request his help, Eder said – making coordinators thrilled every time they see his name in the shift huddle.
“Nick is a man of few words, but his actions never go unnoticed,” Eder said.
For his unfailing calm and diligent commitment to his patients, Nick Boehne is NHRMC’s Employee of Excellence for July 2021.
