New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Heart Center has earned a distinguished three-star rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons for its patient care and outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures.
The rating places NHRMC, now part of Novant Health, among the top medical centers in the country for the procedure. Historically, approximately 6-10 percent of participants receive the three-star rating for isolated CABG surgery.
“This designation shows patients that they are coming to an exemplary program,” said Dr. Peter Kane, cardiothoracic surgeon at Coastal Thoracic Surgical Associates.
To determine its designations, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons examines real-world outcomes of surgery.
“This is a team sport,” said Dr. Howard Marks, cardiothoracic surgeon also at Coastal Thoracic Surgical Associates. “We cannot have good outcomes if there isn’t excellence in the operating room, excellence in the recovery room, excellence in post-operative support.”
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons represents more than 7,300 surgeons, researchers, and allied health care professionals worldwide. Participants can receive one-, two-, or three-star designations, and NHRMC held a two-star designation for several years.
NHRMC’s Heart Center performs about 550 open heart surgeries each year and offers exceptional cardiac care, from prevention to diagnosis and treatment. The Heart Center serves patients across southeastern North Carolina. Learn more at NHRMC.org/heart
