NHRMC recently announced the recipients of two scholarships supporting employee education: the Currie-Garner Family Scholarship and the Hendrix Family Scholarship.
Currie Family Scholarship
The Currie-Garner Family Scholarship is open to current NHRMC employees who are pursuing a nursing career at Cape Fear Community College. This scholarship provides funding for two years at CFCC – including tuition, books, graduation and licensure fees.
For more than a decade, the Currie-Garner Family has supported NHRMC Foundation by providing scholarship opportunities to employees who are looking to advance their career in nursing.
“The Currie-Garner Family Scholarship was created in memory of my mother Lucy, and my sister Kathy, who were nurses,” said Linda Garner-Currie. “What’s special is that in funding this scholarship for over 15 years, we have had friends and family members cared for by several of the nurses who were awarded the scholarship.”
Tanya Bellot, NHRMC patient transporter, is the latest recipient of the scholarship and will attend CFCC's nursing program.
Hendrix Family Scholarship
The Hendrix Family Scholarship provides an employee seeking education to advance their career in health care with $5,000 toward this goal. The $5,000 is applied evenly to two consecutive semesters at an accredited institution of the employee’s choice.
The Hendrix family was inspired to begin a scholarship program because they wanted to express the family’s appreciation for the great care received during a hospitalization.
The recipients of the Hendrix Family Scholarship this year are Allie Reid, NHRMC Physician Group training coordinator, and Shante Holmes, NHRMC phlebotomy technician.
“The Hendrix Family Scholarship gives me the opportunity to grow as a leader and achieve my lifelong goal of serving the community that I love. I am honored to receive this award and am beyond thankful for this opportunity," said Allie Reid.
“It is a blessing to be chosen and I feel absolutely grateful that I am able to continue my education,” said Shante Holmes. “Being chosen and given the opportunity for me to move forward with my career goals shows my children that it's never too late to finish your education.”
When learning of the winners, Alisa Hendrix expressed her enthusiasm, “These two ladies sound like amazing candidates and we are proud to support them. We wish them the best of luck and look forward to following their progress”
