New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) has been closely monitoring novel Coronavirus, also called COVID-19, and is prepared to respond if the outbreak reaches southeastern North Carolina. NHRMC is screening all patients for travel and possible exposure to COVID-19.

A multidisciplinary team led by NHRMC’s Infection Prevention and Control department has been hard at work developing a plan to ensure that NHRMC is able to support the community and our local partners in the case that the disease spreads to this area.

“NHRMC has been proactively working on a detailed response plan involving a team of clinical, emergency preparedness, and non-clinical experts to ensure that we are ready to care for our community during the COVID-19 outbreak,” said Cheryl Schmitter, manager of NHRMC Infection Prevention & Control department.

NHRMC is constantly preparing for public health threats like the coronavirus outbreak. NHRMC is also staying in close communication with local, state and national partners to ensure coordination prior to any impact from COVID-19.

NHRMC is following protocols developed by the CDC to prepare for COVID-19 and urges the community to practice CDC-recommended procedures to stay healthy and prevent the spread of any infectious disease.

The tips below will also help protect you from and prevent the spread of viruses that are already present in the community, such as the flu:

  • Wash your hands frequently. Here are tips for how to wash your hands effectively
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw the tissue away
  • Stay home and avoid contact with others when you are sick

In addition to protecting the community and our patients, NHRMC has developed protocol to protect care providers. Those preparations include methods to assist doctors and staff in identifying potential cases and procedures to protect staff from contracting the virus while caring for patients.

The team from NHRMC will continue its diligent preparation and constant monitoring of the COVID-19 outbreak. For updates and detailed information from the NHRMC team, please visit www.nhrmc.org/coronavirus.
