Six from NHRMC Earn Health Care Hero Honors

New Hanover Regional Medical Center is proud to be part of this region's esteemed health care community, whose reputation is built on the heroic everyday acts of dedicated health care workers. On Friday, the Greater Wilmington Business Journal announced its 2019 Health Care Heroes, and three deserving NHRMC employees, two renowned physicians and a junior volunteer at Pender Memorial Hospital were all honored along with our colleagues from across the region.

NHRMC Winners

Winners from the NHRMC system were:

  • COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT: CHRISTY SPIVEY, administrator for regional services with New Hanover Regional Medical Center
  • HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL: DEANNA CRESCENZI, telemetry monitor technician with NHRMC
  • PHYSICIAN: Dr. WILLIAM HOPE, NHRMC General Surgery Residency Program Director
  • INNOVATION: Dr. JOSEPH PINO, SEAHEC executive director; associate dean and campus director for UNC School of Medicine Wilmington campus; and vice president of graduate medical education at NHRMC
  • VOLUNTEER: LOGAN JONES, junior volunteer at Pender Memorial Hospital

About the Honorees:

Christy Spivey, Administrator for Regional Services:

Christy Spivey HCH2“Since Christy assumed her role as Administrator for Regional Services, her leadership in health care has extended beyond NHRMC into the entire region that NHRMC serves. She is on the road frequently at small, rural and critical access hospitals throughout Southeastern NC serving as a resource to these facilities and helping NHRMC bring new programs/ services to these communities.

“Christy has helped these small regional hospitals implement specialty services such as urology, cardiology, orthopedics and specialty testing so that patients can receive quality care closer to home. As a representative of NHRMC’s Accountable Care Organization, she works with area hospitals to study needs in those communities and helps design programs to optimize health there.

“Christy has served as an influential nurse leader with NHRMC since 1994. She oversaw a $30 million expansion of the NHRMC 17th Street Emergency Department, and opened the first free-standing Emergency Department in the health system. . . . Under her leadership, NHRMC created a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program, taking a lead in the region in helping sexual assault victims receive care while preserving evidence for prosecution.”

Deanna Crescenzi, Telemetry Monitor Technician

Deanna Crescenzi“Deanna has committed to NHRMC like no one else I know. She has worked for NHRMC for over eight years and has excelled in everything she has done there. Many of those years, she did so as a single mother after her late husband died of a massive heart attack at a very young age, thus leaving her with three young children to take care of. She picked up her children and moved to Wilmington from the Hudson Valley of New York, where coincidentally enough she found herself watching the heart rhythms of the patients staying at NHRMC.
“I know the individuals in the telemetry department and they are truly the behind-the-scenes angels that no one really knows about. Who knew someone is individually watching your heart, beat by beat, while you are a patient at NHRMC? This would be a perfect opportunity to shine a light on one Health Care Hero that has done so much to monitor lives in the balance there at NHRMC and would most certainly appreciate it the most.”

Dr. Joseph Pino, SEAHEC Executive Director

Joseph Pino MD“Over his career, Dr. Joseph Pino has built a strong reputation in leadership and innovation in healthcare. This past year in particular, he helped create an innovative approach to develop the next generation of leaders across the healthcare community, and ultimately help shape the future of patient care.
“Dr. Pino initiated and co-designed a highly innovative approach to leadership development called the Healthcare Provider Leadership Program. The program offers a group of 30 high-potential providers a unique opportunity to grow as leaders while developing plans to further strengthen patient care. These leaders include attending physicians, well-regarded directors and providers, as well as a select number of residents and medical students. The group is organized into smaller teams, and each team oversees a medical practice such as Family Medicine, OB/GYN and Women’s Health, Neurology, Cardiology, Trauma Surgery, and others.”

Victoria Oxendine, Manager of Ambulatory Services

Victoria Oxendine“Over her 25 years as a nurse, Victoria Oxendine has mentored nurse practitioner and public health nursing students with UNCW, been an active member of the ACP Leadership Council since 2018 and mentored several ACPs.
“In addition to being a published author in the Diabetes Care Journal, she encourages her teammates and fellow nurses to be active members in committees and to strive to achieve the highest level of education and patient advocacy. This leadership, encouragement and support led to the NHRMC Leader of Excellence Award in 2015.
“In 2018, Victoria wrote and was awarded the March of Dimes Grant for Centering Pregnancy. This grant provided continued support for the clinic’s Centering program, which has reduced the rates of preterm deliveries, low birthweight and infant mortality. In 2018, Victoria collaborated with East Carolina University to train community and organizational volunteers to conduct classes for patients with chronic disease conditions.
“As a leader, Victoria has retained the ability to put herself in her staff members’ shoes, and her empathy and advocacy make her dearly loved.”

Dr. William Hope, General Surgery Residence Program Director

William Hope MD“Dr. Hope is a remarkable surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery. His area of expertise is hernia repair and he is an international leader amongst his peers. In addition to editing a hernia textbook, he is an accomplished researcher, having authored over 75 peer-reviewed research papers, written multiple book chapters, served as an invited speaker to medical conferences across the world and is a member of multiple professional societies.

“Patients come from near and far to seek out his expertise in hernia repair and other minimally invasive surgical procedures. His patients constantly praise him for technical expertise and reassuring bedside manner.

“During Hurricane Florence, he put his own life at risk traveling to the home of a family who was in urgent need of medical care. With the help of the NHRMC EMS, they got to the scene and were able to safely transport the survivors.

“Serving as the General Surgery Residency Program Director of NHRMC, Dr. Hope is responsible for overseeing the education and training of 16 residents during their 5 years of training. . . .

“In summary, Dr. Hope is an outstanding surgeon, researcher, educator and leader.”

Logan Jones, Junior Volunteer

Logan Jones“Logan Jones has been a Junior Volunteer at Pender Memorial Hospital since June 2016 and has accumulated over 500 volunteer hours just at the hospital alone. She is a member of the Duplin Health Sciences Academy and has served over 800 volunteer hours within Pender and Duplin counties. She has had such a powerful impact at our hospital, and our staff, patients and residents are so proud of all her hard work.
“After Hurricane Florence, she went to Wallace-Rose Hill, her high school, to volunteer her time at the shelter. The shelter quickly turned into a distribution center and she became the co-coordinator and social media manager. Within three days, the other co-coordinator left and she landed the coordinator role, at 17 years old! She secured helicopters to deliver supplies, including Pender County, where flooding had hit late in the game.
“She managed a team of over 50 volunteers that worked alongside her to secure and distribute needed supplies after the devastation of Florence.
“Logan is a recent graduate of Wallace-Rose Hill High School Class of 2019 and and graduated 3rd out of her class. In the fall, she will be attending Appalachian State University in the medical field.”
