Wilmington attorney Brian Edes recently donated 16 Amazon Echo smart speakers to the NHRMC Foundation to be used by patients and their families in the MICU.
Brian said that he decided to make gave the gift after his fiancée, Ashley Gillespie, a nurse who works in the Medical ICU, mentioned that music makes a positive impact on her patients.
“It always feels good to give back. If it can give patients comfort, it’s worth it,” Brian said.
Ashley said that she noticed that when family members visited MICU patients, they often played music on their phones, which seemed to add another layer of comfort and decreased anxiety. With the Amazon Echo devices, patients will be able to control the music themselves. She added that the devices will also allow patient to listen to news, weather and help them stay connected to life outside the hospital.
Ashley explained that she is excited for her patients and looks forward to seeing the devices installed in the rooms in the near future.
