Mike Ennis, volunteer at the NHRMC Rehabilitation Hospital, passed away on December 6. He was a beloved fixture at the Rehab Hospital after beginning his volunteer service in July 2001, eventually giving an amazing 19,704 volunteer hours.

He was the smiling and cheerful voice of the Rehab Hospital at the Information Desk in the lobby. He was known as the mayor of Rehab Hospital. He was a stroke and brain injury survivor who had such a positive experience with all of the Rehab staff and patients that he wanted to give back to the organization and family that saved his life.

He volunteered four days a week and was so very dedicated to his volunteer role. He was also one of the first patients to receive massage therapy with the new Healing Arts Program in 1997.
He also volunteered in the Auxiliary Services Room and the Zimmer Cancer Center but his heart and love was with the Rehab staff and patients.

He was recognized at each milestone as a volunteer and in October 2017, he reached his 19,000 hours. He was presented with an American Hospital Association lapel pin by the Volunteer Services and Rehab Hospital staff members.

Mike helped to mentor Junior and College volunteers in the Rehab Hospital and share his passion for the many careers they could explore in the Rehab Hospital. He also provided an education session every summer and shared his personal story and his road to recovery with them.

He was always a healing presence and shared so much of himself and his path to recovery with his patients, staff, and family members. He gave hope and vision of the fullness of a positive life possible after recovery from his accident and illness. To say we all were blessed with his kindness and friendship from his service does not begin to capture the essence of Mike. He will truly be missed by everyone he touched at NHRMC.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
