The American Association for Respiratory Care recognizes October 21-27 this year as Respiratory Care Week to celebrate respiratory therapists and the important work they do to help patients with lung disease. Respiratory Care Week is a time to draw national attention to the importance of lung health, and to celebrate the year round efforts of respiratory therapists. This year’s theme is “Your Breathing Matters.”
As critical members of the healthcare team, respiratory therapists assist in the care and treatment of patients with heart and lung conditions. New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Betty H. Cameron Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Pender Memorial Hospital and the Orthopedic Hospital combined have about 100 respiratory therapists providing in-patient care with mechanical ventilation, oxygen therapy, and aerosol treatments, among others.
